The West Coast Eagles addressed another key focus at today’s AFL rookie draft, adding one of the most exciting young ruckmen in the country - Northern Territory Thunder big man Tony Olango - with its second selection.
He was sandwiched between classy South Fremantle half-forward Ryan Burrows and athletic Claremont midfielder Callan England.
Burrows, who made a late start to the season, impressed with the Bulldogs’ colts in the second half of the year at half-forward. A clever left-footer, he could develop into a quality midfielder.
England’s endurance levels have been likened to those of star Eagle Andrew Gaff and he hails from an athletics background. He also has a good turn of pace and can be damaging both on the inside and the outside.
While Burrows and England are both local products, taking to five the number of West Australians added to the club’s list in the last four days, Olango also has strong connections with the State.
The Kenyan-born ruckman has family in WA and is excited about the opportunity to start his career at West Coast.
“My whole family is in Perth, so it fits really well for me,” Olango said from Darwin.
“I’ll pack tonight and get down there some time tomorrow.
“I wasn’t watching the draft, I was watching a cooking show and then I got a call from a coach from the NT Academy. I didn’t believe it. I’m really excited.”
The 201cm raw athlete has a long way to go, having played football for just three seasons but has a lot of upside.
He had try-outs with big soccer franchise Glasgow Rangers, but chose the Australian game and is one of the great stories of the draft.
