While they may be ‘older, wiser, larger and slower’ the West Coast OWLS, made up of past Eagles greats, showed they still had some tricks up their sleeves on Saturday night when they took out a nail-biting victory over the Fremantle ‘Old Salts’ during the Mainy Tribute Match.

While past Eagles legends including Phil Narkle, Brett Heady, Dean Kemp and David Wirrpanda pleased the crowd with glimpses of their former brilliance, the real star of the show was Chris Mainwaring’s son, Zac, who brought the supporters to their feet as he charged down the ground and displayed some silky skills to finish with two goals for the night.

Mainwaring’s wife, Rani, said she was overwhelmed by the strong support the tribute match received.

‘I’m just so grateful that everyone keeps coming down. It’s such an honour and a great tribute to Mainy,’ she said.

Now in its third year, the Mainy Tribute Match saw over 20,000 tickets sold in 2010 and over $100,000  raised for club charity partner Telethon.

The West Coast Eagles formed an official partnership with Telethon in 2008 and since then have raised over $300,000 for the children’s charity helping to improve the lives of children and young people throughout Western Australia.
