Two passionate West Coast Eagles fans recently rubbed shoulders with their sporting heroes as a reward for their commitment to school.
West Coast and the WA Police embarked on an incentive-based program to encourage students to stay in school and strive for consistent progress throughout 2017.
Eagles indigenous liaison officer Phil Narkle and midfielder Lewis Jetta – a distant cousin of the students – invited them down to the club’s open training session on Monday, where they met superstar Eagles ruckman Nic Naitanui, Sam Mitchell and former Eagles champion Dean Cox.
Narkle and Jetta also took some time to discuss the value of completing school and tackling adversity head on with the two young boys.
WA Police first class constable Jess Gunnis said West Coast, Narkle and Jetta had been exceptionally supportive of the collaborative program.
“This program was very motivating for the boys who have proved consistent progress and gave a strong incentive to continue positive behaviours,” Gunnis said.
“Whilst the boys were a little shy on the day they speak about it often with great excitement. They can even identify all of the player’s signatures to us.
“The support of the West Coast Eagles with youth is greatly appreciated” Gunnis said.
In recognition of the club’s ongoing support, WA Police presented the club with one of its metropolitan NAIDOC police shirts, which were designed by local Noongar artist Bradley Kickett.
Narkle said the club was rapt and honoured to receive the special gift from WA Police.
“I would like to thank the WA Youth Policing Operations and give special mentions to First Class Constable Jess Gunnis, First Class Constable Mike Gibbons and Sergeant Rob Coales for their ongoing support in giving up their time, knowledge and guidance for the young people’s pathway, and rewarding their behaviour with positive actions,” Narkle said.
“I worked seven years as a youth worker helping young people to develop their life skills, to set their goals and work together in a team environment. I am very supportive when it comes to helping young people achieve their goals.
“We look forward to future opportunities to support the WA Youth Policing Operations and their strong incentives to continue positive behaviours.”
