Selfless West Coast Eagles stalwart Chris Masten and the club have reached a mutual agreement to part ways, allowing the indefatigable wingman to explore other AFL opportunities.
Masten, a veteran of 215 games and a member of the 2018 premiership team, graduated from the West Coast Eagles team store as a casual when at school to be drafted by the Eagles with No.3 in the 2007 draft.
Part of the trade that saw Chris Judd return to his home State of Victoria to play with Carlton, Masten played his 200th game in round two this season against Greater Western Sydney at Optus Stadium – coincidentally on the same night that Josh Kennedy (200) and Shannon Hurn (250) also reached significant career marks.
An elite runner who has played an important role for the team, Masten is keen to continue his career at another club.
“I have had a wonderful time at the Eagles, the club I supported as a kid,” he said today.
“It was a dream to play for them and to play in a premiership last year was the ultimate for me.
“Over the last 12 or 13 years I have enjoyed every minute of it and have made some life-long friends. I will certainly miss the boys, we have a really special bond, but it is time to have a look at other options.”
General Manager – Football Craig Vozzo said it was always difficult to see great club people leave, but it was an unfortunate part of the industry, particularly at this time of the year.
“Chris has been a terrific player for us for a long time and a very popular teammate who has always adopted a team-first approach,” Vozzo said.
“People other than those in the inner sanctum might not understand the important role Chris has played for us in the last few years, but he was very important to our success.
“Having said that, it is the appropriate time for Chris to explore opportunities elsewhere and we wish him, Emmi and family every success for their future endeavours.”
