Liam Baker is confident West Coast can quickly show improvement after zeroing-in on what went wrong in Sunday’s tough round one loss to Gold Coast.

The Eagles reviewed the 87-point loss on Tuesday, with their deficiencies at the contest and with their workrate exposed by the red-hot Suns.

“It’s more of a mindset thing and getting the boys playing a bit better in the midfield, but it’s not just them,” Baker said.

“We saw today our backs were poor, our forwards were poor, our mids were poor as well.

“We copped our whack today and we’ll get on with it.

“Obviously the contest and work rate stuff, we got taught a lesson on those two facets of the game.

“If you get beaten on the inside and beaten on the outside spread you’re not going to win many games, or you’re not going to even get close as we saw, so they’ll be the learnings.”

Baker was bullish that the team had plenty of scope to improve as they build chemistry under new coach Andrew McQualter in 2025.

“Any club if they start like that it’s going to be a pretty rough feeling. It’s one game. It’s very disappointing, but we reviewed it today and we’ll get on with it,” Baker said.

“I don’t think that’s a reflection of the way we’ll go this year. I’m optimistic for this year and the years ahead.

“But this week is this week and we’ll have another crack.”

Taking on Brisbane at the Gabba is arguably the toughest task in football but Baker said the Eagles would be up for the fight on Sunday.

“It’s going to be tough, no doubt, but it’s a good challenge for us,” Baker said.

“We’ll probably keep banging on about it but when you get smacked in the contest like that you’re not going to win many games.

“That’s where it’s going to be this weekend, contest, workrate and we’ll do our best to put up a better fight.

“You never really know with footy, it can turn very quick, and that’s what we’re expecting this week.”
