The West Coast Eagles were ‘thrilled with the outcome’ after executing a strategy to bring in quality talent and balance list needs at the AFLW Draft, List Manager Jordan Loxley says.

The Eagles welcomed four new players – Victorian duo Lucia Painter and Kayla Dalgleish, plus South Australian pair Charlotte Riggs and Lucy Boyd – during Monday night’s first-ever fully national AFLW draft.

Loxley was delighted to secure Painter and Riggs at picks No.7 and 24 respectively, before wasting no time swooping on Boyd and Dalgleish at selections 53 and 57.

“We went into the night with the strategy of taking the two best available players with our (first two) selections, and then at the back end we were trying to round out and balance the list," Loxley told westcoasteagles.com.au.

“To be able to get an inside mid with our first selection, a key position player and then a couple of different types with a small forward and a medium back was a wonderful outcome.”

Lucia Painter and Daisy Pearce

Painter, from the Bendigo Pioneers, is a powerful inside midfielder who was desperate to cross to Perth and play for coach Daisy Pearce.

“Lucia, we’ve been massive fans of hers throughout the last two years and she really fits a list need for us to bring in another really strong inside mid who can win the ball at the contest but also get it on the outside,” Loxley said.

“She’s also able to go forward and be a real threat in the air and kick goals. She adds something we don’t have a lot of with the depth of her kick and strength around the contest.

“We had our fingers and toes crossed she would be there at pick seven – and she was – so we were thrilled.”

Riggs is capable of playing forward or back and has three years’ experience playing senior SANFLW, along with Boyd, who has a strong footy IQ.

“Charlotte is an unbelievable character as well as footballer,” Loxley said.

“She’s really strong in the air, a super contested mark, has the ability to play both ends of the ground and can pinch-hit in the ruck. She’s a really well-rounded key position player.

“We’ve been following Lucy all year and we are really pleased with the way she’s gone about it.

“She’s another super person, but the way she goes about her game, she rebounds, she’s got really good depth in her kick and defends really well.

“We see her as being able to hopefully go through the midfield in time. We think she’s got great upside.”

With the fifth-last pick in the draft, the Eagles were keen to add some pace and Kayla Dalgleish was a straight-forward choice.

“Kayla is a small forward with electric speed, puts on great pressure, has the uncanny ability to make something out of nothing and her workrate is outstanding,” Loxley said.

“When she was still on the board we were rapt to bring her in.”
