1. The bravery of key defender Jeremy McGovern is well documented; fearlessly going back with the flight of the ball, battling through under adversity with rib injuries. But the courage to back himself in with his skills is also a key attribute and being prepared to pull the trigger on a daring kick down the spine was a key aspect of setting Waalitj Marawar on the path to victory against Narrm. Hitting 50 metre targets helped Waalitj scythe their way through the Dees defensive structure.
2. McGovern’s wingman was also instrumental in the performance with Tom Barrass combining with his good mate to control the air. They took 16 marks between them to quite literally stand tall in defence. Combined with captain Liam Duggan and ever evolving youngster Brady Hough, Waalitj's defence held sway for much of the night, so often pressing forward to stymie Narrm's forward thrusts.
3. Waalitj were “on” from the outset with their pressure unsettling Narrm and creating many uncustomary Demons’ turnovers. The pressure factor across the game sat at 1.90 which resulted in wins in a number of key areas. They won more of the ball (351 possessions to 324) which spent 59% of the time in Waalitj's forward half and that saw a decisive inside 50 advantage of 56-35. Waalitj also won the marks inside 50 count 13-9 and all of those numbers helped to create a 35-point win.
4. The main contributor to leading the way with marks inside the forward 50 was Jake Waterman who is stringing together a remarkable season. Waterman took an incredible 13 marks, including six inside the arc and returned from a week off with concussion by bagging another five goals. He could easily have been adjudged best on field for a dominant display that in conjunction with the effort of Jack Darling (three goals and 12 tackles) played such a big part in the triumph.
5. The performances of first-year midfielder Harley Reid continue to excite Eagles fans - and lovers of the game across the country. His stunning first quarter goal when he took the ball away from the centre clearance, had three bounces and converted from inside the 50 metre arc was something special. He finished with 21 disposals and seven clearances in another impressive display.
