The West Coast Eagles have suffered a heartbreaking setback, with new recruit Matilda Sergeant sustaining a ruptured ACL that will see her sidelined for the 2024 AFLW season.
The injury occurred during a training drill last week, and the 25-year-old will require surgery to repair the damage.
Sergeant was recruited to the Eagles in the off-season from Claremont Football Club, having also played 19 games for the Fremantle Dockers.
Eagles AFLW head coach Daisy Pearce said losing Sergeant was a terrible blow to the team.
“We’re heartbroken for Matilda, it’s devasting news for her and for our team,” Pearce said.
“The club will wrap their arms around her and support her through this difficult time.
“We will be by her side and look forward to her continuing to play an active part in our program.”
