Ruck recruit Matt Flynn is confident his strengths can complement explosive big man Bailey Williams' work in a powerful combination for West Coast next season.
Flynn arrived in Perth last month ready to battle it out with Williams – coming off a career-best campaign – if necessary for the No.1 role, but also excited to see how they can fit into the same team.
“I’m looking forward to getting to work with him and hopefully forming a really strong partnership either battling for that spot or creating a really strong combination going forward,” Flynn said as the Eagles kicked off their Community Camp in WA’s south-west.
“Bailey is a lot more athletic than me – he’s got that strength – but then I’ve got my strength.
“I think I can be a bit combative and really competitive in helping that clearance game for us. Bailey can get forward, take a mark and use that speed and aerial power that he’s got.
“If we can get our two strengths working together I think it will be really strong for the side.”
Flynn was tempted by the opportunity at West Coast after being stuck behind Greater Western Sydney surprise packet Kieren Briggs, who played a big role in their run to a preliminary final.
“I had a good chat with Adam Simpson and where I was at the Giants as well, I had a good chat to the coaching staff there, and I think the opportunity for me was strongest here,” Flynn said.
“We’ve got such a young list here with a lot of talent coming through like (Reuben) Ginbey and (Elijah) Hewett and these kind of players that are really exciting.
“You see that and my age fits the demographic of the list and where we are trying to go, so it’s exciting.”
Flynn managed 33 games for the Giants and the 26-year-old heads west physically ready to impose himself and assist the Eagles’ emerging on-ball brigade.
“Just from what I’ve seen at training they’re so powerful, they’re explosive, they’re fit and they’ve returned in amazing shape,” Flynn said.
“It will be amazing to have them working with me.
“I think the big one is Reuben. Everyone has said it, he’s been amazing. The shape he’s in right now he reminds me of a young Tom Green and the way he moves, his skills and how strong he is.
“He’s been someone that has been super impressive for me.”
