Johnston boasts all-round athleticism and class to match, and delivered on the national championships stage with an impressive 29 disposals, six clearances and five tackles against Western Australia to be one of Vic Metro’s best afield. A midfielder or mid-sized forward who is a neat and creative ball user, Johnston played in Sandringham’s successful Coates Talent League side and averaged 17.5 disposals and 3.5 tackles, while also getting a taste for VFL action in two matches for the Zebras. His agility and evasiveness help buy him time in possession and Johnston tested exceptionally well at the draft combine, finishing high up the boards in the 2km time trial (6:17) and agility test (8.39 seconds).
