1. The West Coast Eagles suffered a 70-point defeat at the hands of Melbourne on Sunday at Mineral Resources Park, their third 50-plus point defeat this season. After a positive first half from the Eagles, and a goalless second term from Melbourne, the visitors turned up the heat and delivered a dominant second-half performance, kicking away to an unattainable margin, with West Coast unable to respond or stop the onslaught.
2. A major focus for the developing Eagles side this season has been producing a full, four-quarter effort in games. On numerous occasions, West Coast have started with high pressure and intensity, but have been unable to sustain it for the duration of a match. This was the case again on Sunday, staying in the contest until half time, then significantly fading away while the opposition took control. It’s an issue West Coast are yet to find a solution for this season, but it will remain a heavy focus for the final three games of the season.
3. Exciting young defender Charlie Thomas is having a career-best season and has been one of the shining lights in 2023 for West Coast. Her vision and awareness in the Eagles backline makes her an incredible asset, while her ability to read the play and stay strong in a contest is invaluable to the team. Thomas finished with a game-high 28 disposals and a game-high eight marks on Sunday, further highlighting her form consistency and solidifying a name for herself as one of the most influential defenders in the league.
4. Another game, another outstanding performance from teenage talent Ella Roberts. Roberts is a pleasure to watch, with her skill and passion for the game on full display no matter the opposition or the margin on the scoreboard. Roberts finished with 26 disposals, five marks and five tackles against the Dees, her speed, strength and athleticism around the ground continuing to evolve from week to week.
5. West Coast will travel to Windy Hill in round eight to take on Essendon in their final road trip of the season. The Bombers currently sit in fifth spot in the AFLW standings and come into this game on the back of a 17-point win over Richmond on Saturday. The Eagles will be eager to bounce-back from their performance against Melbourne, and will need to bring their A-game to be competitive against the in-form Dons.
