1. West Coast were unable to secure the four points on Sunday against Sydney at Henson Park, falling by just 13 points in what was a much better display from the developing Eagles. They showed heart, intensity and effort, and some wasteful opportunities in front of goal was the only difference in the game, with West Coast finishing with two goals and nine points, having two more shots on goal than the Swans, also winning the contested possessions 103-99, with the Eagles just unable to convert on the scoreboard.
2. Eagles coach Michael Prior shared after the game that the team has been working really hard on their forward 50 entries, and giving the forwards more chances to score. West Coast definitely improved in that area in this game, with the ball living in their forward half in the first quarter, with many additional opportunities throughout the game, but unfortunately their efforts didn’t pay off with results on the scoreboard.
3. Young defender Charlie Thomas played a crucial role in the Eagles backline, positioning herself well around the contest and spoiling many opportunities for the Swans when they were gaining momentum in front of goal. Thomas finished with 16 disposals, including seven intercept possessions, five marks and three tackles, and showed class beyond her years.
4. West Coast skipper Emma Swanson put on another outstanding performance, leading her side from the front and having a big impact around the ground. Swanson’s leadership is a pillar of consistency for the young Eagles squad, finishing with a game-high 22 disposals, four marks, three tackles and one incredible goal, some pure magic from the boundary that will no doubt be a contender for Goal of the Year.
5. The Eagles now have just a five-day break before suiting up again against Port Adelaide at Mineral Resources Park on Friday night. The Eagles will look to replicate their pressure and intensity around the ball when the face the 14th placed Port, who come into this game after a 28-point loss to Geelong in round four.
