Gun spearhead Oscar Allen is among a group of West Coast Eagles set to be tested at training this week before putting their hands up for the trip to face the Western Bulldogs at Marvel Stadium.
Allen hyperextended his elbow during the RAC Derby, while premiership defender Tom Cole was also in obvious pain and hobbling after accidentally kicking an opponent.
Both have been cleared of serious injury and are hopeful of taking their place on the plane to Melbourne.
Meanwhile, mid-season draftee Ryan Maric (calf) is a test and ill trio Brady Hough, Jack Petruccelle and Callum Jamieson are likely to play this weekend.
“Oscar’s scans have come back quite positive that he’s just aggravated an injury that he’s had previously,” physiotherapist Steve Allan told westcoasteagles.com.au.
“If he gets through training later in the week he’ll be available to play on the weekend.
“Coley unfortunately kicked an opposition player’s shin with the ankle he’s had surgery on. We subbed him out to be cautious because it happened quite late in the game.
“Luckily, he has pulled up really well so if he trains fully later in the week he’ll be available to play on the weekend.
“’Petch’, ‘Houghy’ and ‘Jamo’ were all late outs with illness last week. They had the weekend off and managed to get over their illness, so if they train throughout the week they will be available for selection.
“Ryan’s calf has recovered well. He had a bit of tightness heading into last week’s game so he didn’t play.
“He’s ticked off everything he needed to with his running progressions, so if he trains later in the week he’ll be available to play this weekend.”
Retiring skipper Luke Shuey and champion defender Shannon Hurn won’t be available to take on the Dogs, but are on target for a fitting finale in round 24 against Adelaide before hanging up the boots.
“Shuey and Hurn are both recovering well from their respective injuries,” Allan said.
“Boots is back running and has ticked off his speed markers so he’ll train later this week, but we’re going to have the aim to get him right for that last game against Adelaide.
“Similarly, with ‘Bunga’ he’s progressing really well with his Achilles. He still has a few more boxes to tick but if all goes to plan he’ll be available for that Adelaide game as well.”
However, it is season over for a trio of Eagles, with Dom Sheed (foot), Connor West (knee) and Coby Burgiel (hamstring) running out of time to return this year.
“Dom unfortunately has got some bone stress in his foot and upon getting some more medical advice we won’t be able to start him running this week, which will make him unavailable for the last game of the year unfortunately,” Allan said.
“Connor West and Coby Burgiel are both progressing really well from their respective operations, Westy on his knee and Coby on his hamstring.
“They’re both back running, changing direction and doing some training with the group, but unfortunately time is just not on our side.
“The aim was to try and get them right for a game at the back end of the year. Time has just run out so they will be unavailable for the last game of the year as well.”
