On the surface the West Coast Eagles got what they wanted out of an intraclub practice match at Mineral Resources Park tonight.

It was a good solid hit-out, important players got their hands on the ball and a good volume of work into their bodies, with the match ending with no obvious injuries.

As expected the “Probables” (wearing blue) dominated the contest and led by 11 goals at half-time.

The scoreboard was irrelevant, but what was pleasing was the way they were prepared to move the ball quickly and the performances of several players who wielded an influence over the game.

Recruit Jayden Hunt, playing largely off the wing, showed dash and dare while Campbell Chesser kicked two goals in the first half in a significant step forward in his preparation after missing the whole of last year through injury.

Chesser would take confidence from the hit out and, having done what was required, he completed the night by running laps with Jake Waterman and Liam Duggan.

At the same time Nic Naitanui was rested after the main break and then both Shannon Hurn and Luke Foley were taken out of the game after the third period.

Draftee Reuben Ginbey, rotating through the middle and off half-back with Elliot Yeo, was involved in the game throughout while Yeo was probably best afield, providing energy and speed through the middle and out of the back half.

Small forward Noah Long kicked the opening goal of the match inside the first minute while Jamaine Jones and Samo Petrevski-Seton were also lively.

The standout in the “yellow team” of possibles was second year defender Brady Hough.

After half-time the teams were thrown around, with some players rotating from team to team, but the highlight was the ruck contest between Callum Jamieson and Bailey Williams, with both emerging big men having their moments.

Tom Cole, who did not play last season, also showed some good signs in defence while Tom Barrass, after being swung forward in the second term, and Jeremy McGovern played with their customary authority in the air. Alex Witherden and Josh Rotham also rebounded strongly.

Midfielders Tim Kelly, Jai Culley and Andrew Gaff were also ubiquitous on an evening when captain Luke Shuey and key forward Oscar Allen were rested, while loping midfielder Dom Sheed was also managed.
