For some it was important to further enhance claims for early opportunities in the 2023 season. For others it was about progression towards being ready for the start of a campaign that is just six weeks away.
Whatever the mindset or the stage of their physical well-being, most of the West Coast Eagles players got what they needed out of match simulation at Mineral Resources Park today.
Young, emerging players like Reuben Ginbey, Jai Culley, Elijah Hewett and Noah Long produced the energy and enthusiasm expected in this competitive hit-out and provided a reminder of their credentials.
Jayden Hunt produced the dash off half-back that was the reason he was pursued as an unrestricted free agent from Melbourne, Samo Petrevski-Seton continued his strong pre-season and Alex Witherden was under notice down back.
Then there was Callum Jamieson who was eye-catching forward and in the ruck, while Jamaine Jones showcased his trademark energy and verve with Connor West and Zane Trew.
Jamieson and Bailey Williams both enjoyed good moments on the ball and when pushing forward.
Dom Sheed, Tom Cole, Elliot Yeo and Oscar Allen – all of whom played little or no football in 2022 – appeared to enjoy just being out there while a number of senior players did what was required at different moments as they graduated their preparations.
Tim Kelly, Andrew Gaff, Jamie Cripps, Jeremy McGovern and Tom Barrass would fall into that category.
Skipper Luke Shuey showed good touch at half-back and through the midfield, while ruckman Nic Naitanui controlled the air and Liam Ryan was lively up forward.
Coaches and players would take many positives from the work out, the only downside seeing forward Jack Petruccelle make an early exit as a result of a jarred ankle.
A number of other players – including games record-holder Shannon Hurn, forward Jake Waterman, young midfielder Campbell Chesser, defender Luke Foley and ruckman Harry Barnett – continued their build up with a solid session on the adjacent oval.
