There were three new faces as West Coast entered its third week of pre-season, with draftees Noah Long, Harry Barnett and Coby Burgiel hitting the track for the first time at Mineral Resources Park.
Monday’s training also marked the first day senior players were required back at training, although they all had already returned early to get a head start on their pre-season campaigns.
The towering figure of pick 23 Harry Barnett was hard to miss on the track – stuck to the hip of skipper Luke Shuey as the two ran through warm-up side by side.
First-round selections and WA locals Elijah Hewett and Rueben Ginbey led the group of draftees through their paces after having a few days extra days at Mineral Resources Park under their belt.
Talking to the media prior to training, senior midfielder Dom Sheed was impressed with the new stock of talent within the group and backed Ginbey to make an early impact in his debut season.
"To have some good young talent come in is awesome for us, and I have no doubt he can have an immediate impact this pre-season and this season," Sheed said.
"He's got to work extremely hard, like anyone in the AFL, to make it, but he's got a good head on his shoulders.
"He's got to play to his strength as well, and as a young player you do get a bit of a licence to do that.
"Do everything right – I'm sure he will – and he could have a good career ahead of him."
Small forward Noah Long looked especially impressive in his first outing, displaying a silky skillset followed by nailing some effortless set shots right in front of his new coach Adam Simpson, who joined in with the new group for a big part of their morning.
The pace of training significantly increased from the week prior, with a number of players standing out for their work done over the off-season.
Senior players Shannon Hurn, Andrew Gaff and Jamie Cripps were leading the pack during the first block of running, which set the tone for the younger players to follow throughout the remainder of the session.
Through the midfield, Tim Kelly looked sharp as a tack taking everything at full pace and hitting his targets with precision while Connor West directed traffic well as he moved the ball down the corridor.
In a great sign for the future, young big men Harry Edwards and Jack Williams also showed promising signs over the session, and it was evident the pair have been working extremely hard over the past two weeks.
