The West Coast Eagles’ first two selections in the NAB AFL National Draft – Reuben Ginbey and Elijah Hewett – will inherit two famous numbers as they strive to carve out memorable careers at the club.
Recruited on Monday night at the draft event in Melbourne, Ginbey has been allocated the No.7 guernsey previously worn by the likes of premiership stars Craig Turley, Chad Fletcher and Chris Masten. For the last two years it had been adorned by Zac Langdon.
Hewett will wear the guernsey first won by Steve Malaxos, his former coach at Scotch College and 1987 Club Champion. It was also at the centre of the 2006 premiership when carried into battle by Beau Waters and in 2018 when Jack Redden donned it during a remarkable September campaign when he won the player of the finals mantle.
Former Melbourne defender Jayden Hunt will inherit the No.5 guernsey from all-Australian half-back Brad Sheppard. That number was also a part of the inaugural success in 1992 on the back of Dwayne Lamb, while Tyson Stenglein carried it into the 2006 Grand Final.
Exciting young ruck prospect Harry Barnett will wear #30, made famous by Peter Matera who won the Norm Smith Medal for a five-goal haul in 1992 and was also prominent in the victory two years later. It has this year been vacated by hard-nosed utility player Jackson Nelson.
The #44 has been handed to small forward Noah Long while utility player Cody Burgiel will wear #45. Next Generation Academy players Jordyn Baker (#38) and Tyrell Dewar (#43) have also been allocated their numbers.
