Champion West Coast Eagles defender Shannon Hurn will extend his career into an 18th season after agreeing to a one-year contract extension.
The unflappable Hurn will add to his record 320 games for the Eagles after completing the formality of reaching agreement with the club.
One of the most respected figures in club history, the evergreen Hurn was one of the compelling stories of a tough 2022 campaign when he finished runner-up to key defender Tom Barrass in the Club Champion Award.
His second placing in the John Worsfold Medal count marked the second occasion in his career that he had been in the top two – the previous occasion was 13 years ago when he sat alongside another champion defender Darren Glass.
After being drafted with selection 13 in the 2005 National Draft, he took little time to establish his position in the team and has long been a fixture as he became the first player in club history to rack up 300 games.
The 2018 premiership captain and dual all-Australian will continue to play a pivotal educational role with the youngsters around him as the club fortifies its commitment to a rebuild.
“There has never been much doubt about Shannon continuing into 2023,” said National Recruiting Manager Rohan O’Brien.
“Clearly he was among our best players consistently last season and while he has an important role to play in defence, he is equally vital in helping the development of the next generation.
“The knowledge and football intellect he has built over the last 17 years will continue to be of great benefit to the young players in our squad.”
