West Coast’s priority is to make Mikayla Western as comfortable as possible in the early stages of her recovery from a serious broken arm suffered during Saturday’s loss to Geelong.
Western, a shining light with her blistering pace and pressure in eight games this season, fractured her upper arm with just over three minutes to play at Ikon Park following a trademark chasedown tackle.
“It’s a fractured humerus, or the upper arm. Unfortunately, a pretty tough way to end the season,” AFLW Head of High Performance Wes Salisbury told westcoasteagles.com.au.
“First and foremost from out point-of-view is to make her as comfortable as possible and look forward to a big pre-season coming up.”
The 24-year-old has returned to Perth after being taken to hospital in Melbourne and took to social media on Sunday to thank everyone for their support.
“Thanks to everyone who reached out and those who supported me yesterday. Means a lot. See ya in SZN 8.”

While Western’s promising season is unfortunately over, a fellow first-year Eagle is in the mix to return.
Ella Smith missed the Cats clash with an ankle complaint but is set to push her case to play in West Coast’s final home game for season seven against the Western Bulldogs at Mineral Resources Park on Saturday at 2.10pm.
“Ella Smith tweaked her ankle at training last week,” Sailsbury said.
“Took it pretty easy over the weekend and will look to join the main group again this week in the lead-up to Saturday’s game.”
