1. The AFLW competition has had its critics in recent weeks, but this game was further evidence of the rapidly improving standard. The ball movement from both teams was exciting and clean, with Richmond producing their best in the second quarter. The Eagles kept fighting in line with their trademark this season, before the Tigers put the game to bed with a couple of goals in the closing minutes.
2. Results aside, Eagles fans must be enjoying the evolution of this team. Their skills and game plan have developed nicely in their second season under Michael Prior and have contended in every match with the exception of a disappointing performance against Essendon. Captain Emma Swanson leads this team brilliantly, both on and off field and was again a key player in this performance.
3. When the Eagles played their best football in the third term they threatened to claw their way back into the game. The surge was built around some grit around the stoppages where Aisling McCarthy worked hard. Unfortunately the Eagles did not enjoy the scoreboard pressure they deserved and should have been closer than 13 points in arrears at the last change.
4. The Eagles will continue to work in search of finding avenues to goal as they have struggled to hit the scoreboard as heavily as they would like. In large part that was again down to supply, with Richmond doubling the forward 50 entries with 39 penetrations of the arc compared to just 19. The Eagles looked dangerous at times, but are missing a tall target deep in attack.
5. The excitement in the camp around the group of youngsters who have come into the squad in the last 12 months is palpable. Having already seen ruck Sarah Lakay and utility player Ella Roberts earn rising star nominations, defender Charlie Thomas is also staking a claim. Thomas was close to best afield for the Eagles with 23 possessions and seven marks as she continued a strong run of form.
