The Perth Hornets pride themselves on being a safe space within the LGBTQIA+ community for people of any skill level with an interest in AFL.
Morrison, who played 148 games for West Coast, spoke with players from the club and joined in on their training session at their home ground in Wembley Downs.
“It was a really good experience; they are very passionate about their footy and community,” said Morrison, who is also the Eagles’ AFLW recruiting manager.
“They’re really inclusive and supportive of each other and you really feel that when you are down there.
“They contacted our club and told us about their journey and what they are looking to do and obviously us at West Coast Eagles want to support them and everyone within their community.
“We had the chance to go down there and take a few drills and hopefully that will help them when they are playing.”
The West Coast Eagles are committed to continuing their journey to celebrate diversity and inclusion across the club and the community.
Earlier this week the club unveiled its AFLW Pride guernsey, which will be worn in Friday night’s clash against the Tigers at Mineral Resources Park and against Geelong at Ikon Park in round eight.
Players from the Perth Hornets will provide the guard of honour as the Eagles enter the field against Richmond.
“There will be an ongoing connection to help support each other,” Morrison said.
“We are a club that is supportive and inclusive of everyone and (there is a) connection there to support each other.”
Perth Hornets Club president Ian Odlum expressed how AFL clubs and other sporting organisations can spark a conversation, creating a lasting and positive change in the diversity and inclusion space.
“We are excited to see the reveal of the Eagles Pride guernsey and to read the meaning behind it,” Odlum said.
“It’s a well thought out and meaningful design that has had input from players past and present within the LGBTQI+ community which is really important.
“Children, youths and even adults watching the sport they love and the players they idolise being accepting of them no matter who they are makes a positive difference.
“That’s why it was so important to us to get in touch with the Eagles.
“Chad’s visit was really well received. He has such an open and supportive presence and took the time to take our club through a great session including some one-on-one guidance as well as team skill-based drills.
“We are really excited for the road ahead and what we can achieve.”
