The West Coast Eagles have suffered a disappointing blow following their round one win against Port Adelaide, with scans confirming forward Kellie Gibson has torn the ACL in her left knee.
Gibson was struck down in the first quarter at Mineral Resources Park on Saturday, just moments after kicking the opening goal of the game.
Medical staff could not confirm the seriousness of the injury during the match however a resulting scan has shown that she has sustained an ACL tear, ruling her out for the season.
“Unfortunately, scans have confirmed the worst and It’s disappointing news for Kellie and the entire squad.” Head of Women’s Football Michelle Cowan said.
“We will wrap our arms around Kellie and support her through her rehabilitation. She is a proud and passionate Eagle, and we know that she will be doing everything she can to support the team for the rest of the season.
“While Kellie will not be playing this season, she will be still around the playing group and the club working alongside Rehab Physiotherapist Alex Chin.
“Kellie will also play a key part with the playing group and continue to evolve her leadership skills off the field.”
Last season’s leading goalkicker Aimee Schmidt will also miss round two after entering the concussion protocols.
“Aimee has been ruled out with delayed onset concussion after she played on from a marking contest in the fourth quarter,” Head of Health Mark Finucane said.
“She was assessed at the time and was cleared to play out the game however has had some symptoms since.
“She will enter the protocols as per the AFL concussion policy and will wait out the 12 mandatory day period ultimately missing this weekend’s game.”
