While a win is always good to boost morale, West Coast AFLW Head Coach Michael Prior says the Eagles are looking a lot further than just the result in their upcoming game against Fremantle.
In their final warm-up game, the Eagles travel to Fremantle Oval to face the Dockers at 12pm on Saturday, coming off an encouraging scratch match victory over Hawthorn.
“It’s always nice getting a win, but at the end of the day there’s a lot more we are going to take away from this weekend,” Prior told Sportsday WA.
“We are looking to see if the hard work we’ve put in at training is translating over to the game and trying to see where we can improve across the field.
“We got the result over Fremantle in the pre-season last year and that meant nothing seeing as we only got another win for the rest of the year.
“There’s a lot more to managing a pre-season game, coaches will be managing players loads and the teams put out on the field isn’t necessarily the club’s best side.
“We’ve got the bigger picture in mind and round one against Port Adelaide is the game we really want to win.”
As West Coast has prepared for the short turnaround into this season the side has added some key talent with Prior hoping it can lead to more goals.
“We’ve worked on a number of factors leading into this year a key part of that is getting the ball into the front half more than we have in previous years,” Prior said.
“We’ve definitely added more talent in the forwards, we’ve got Kate Bartlett who comes into the side after kicking 35 goals in the WAFL last year.
“We’ve also got Ella Roberts who comes in as a good young player who can challenge opposition teams with her height and athleticism.”
West Coast came away with an impressive win against Hawthorn last weekend however Prior’s approach to last weekend’s game is no different.
“We learned a bit last weekend against Hawthorn,” he said.
“We’ve got a long way to go, however the players who’ve had really strong pre-seasons really showed it during the game.
“The side were running across the ground really well in the final quarter which is pleasing to see.”
Coming into the final practice match before the start of season seven of AFLW, Prior emphasised how far the team has come in such a short period of time since the last season ended in April.
“Our fitness has gone to a new level,” Prior explained.
“We’ve been focussing on the little things and when the side is nailing those the team looks really well.
“The hard work the players put in over the break really showed against Hawthorn last week.
“To kick 11 and four is really pleasing, we’ll take that.”
