Hawthorn denied West Coast a victory at the MCG with a hard-fought 25-point win in  challenging conditions on Sunday.

The Hawks used a seven-goal second quarter to secure a 15.12 (102) to 12.5 (77) win – their sixth of the season while the Eagles remain on two wins for the season and 17th place on the AFL ladder.

West Coast (2-15) is back in a fight to avoid the wooden spoon, level on points with North Melbourne after the Kangaroos' shock win over Richmond on Saturday.

Hawks forward Luke Breust was the match-winner with a six-goal haul.

Tom Mitchell (32 disposals), Jai Newcombe (28) and Josh Ward (34) were busy for Hawthorn.

Tom Barrass starred for the Eagles, while Andrew Gaff knocked up 30 possessions and Tim Kelly fought through a corked leg to contribute with 21 touches and a goal.

Barrass was sensational in defence. He had career highs for marks (18) and disposals (30) while captain Luke Shuey did his best to turn the game with 17 possessions and two brilliant goals.

Mid-season rookie draftee Jai Culley, who became the 47th player to play a game for West Coast this season laid a game high 11 tackles and had 10 contested possessions in a promising debut.

Jake Waterman booted three goals, including one in the last term which gave the Eagles hope late but goals to Connor Macdonald and Bruest sealed the victory for the Hawks.
