West Coast are building towards a better brand and identity but it’s about doing that for four quarters, defender Liam Duggan says.
The Eagles suffered a 63-point loss at home on Sunday against Carlton, after a slow start to the game caused the Eagles to go scoreless in the first quarter before another scoreless term to finish the match.
West Coast’s seven-goal second quarter showed the team’s top gear is still good enough, but closing the gap between their best and worst is a major focus.
“The disappointing part was how we dropped away on the weekend and the way we started,” Duggan said.
“We are building towards our brand and our identity and now we can start to see that, so it’s doing that for four quarters now.”
Carlton’s twin forwards Harry Mckay and Charlie Curnow were in dominant form, kicking 10 goals between them, in part thanks to a deluge of supply.
“They are great players and obviously building towards something pretty good,” Duggan said.
“I thought our bigs did okay but if our bigs had 70 inside 50s I reckon they would be doing alright too.”
A highlight of the match was champion forward Josh Kennedy kicking his 700th club goal. The dual Coleman medallist ranks amongst the truly elite key forwards in the AFL.
At the age of 34, for Kennedy to still be attacking the footy the way he does during the week and on game day is inspiring to many.
“When someone like JK steps away it’ll be a big loss but the legacy he would have left at the footy club at that time is pretty big,” Duggan said.
“He’ll be one of those blokes that we’re still speaking about in 10 years’ time, he’s legend will live on.”
Sadly, on the weekend Fremantle players Michael Walters and Michael Frederick were racially abused on social media, and Duggan suggested stronger education is needed.
“It’s really flattening – as someone who has never been in that position to be racially abused or vilified, I can’t put myself in their shoes, but I know it’s pretty sickening to hear that it’s still going on,” Duggan said.
“Education needs to ramp up if people are still dishing that out.
“It sucks for them and their families that they are put through this time and time again – there is no tolerance for it as far as I’m concerned”.
