Take us through the game?
It’s pretty disappointing, it’s disappointing. But, small wins tonight in the first half, we’re working on some stuff and we saw glimpses of it, in the first half. What were we, 30 points down, half-time? I thought we could’ve been a bit closer, we kicked 2-6, something like that in the second quarter. But after half-time, centre bounce got overwhelmed, we couldn’t stop that momentum, and then the last quarter was turnovers and a bit of discipline as well. Each quarter had a different problem, so we’ll be balanced with it because we’ve obviously got to get better, and with what we’ve got at the moment we’re struggling a little bit.
Still limited player availability?
We can’t make excuses like that every week, that’s the reality, that’s what’s going on. We’re getting some players back but they’re not going to be fully flying. So, we need to get them through WAFL, get them as fit as we can, throw them in the deep end. Some young players we’ve got in there, some players we’ve recruited in the last 12-to-18 months that probably need a bit more time at WAFL, they’re learning the hard way, so that’s just the reality. But, we don’t want to drop that much in the second half. Albeit, I thought last week we started really poorly and finished okay, and this week we gave a reasonably good showing of ourselves and then it faded right away.
Who stood up today?
There’s some individuals that stood up for us tonight as best they could, Jack Darling, Tim Kelly, I thought Tom Barrass had a really good match up with Aaron Naughton, how many inside 50s did they have, 70? 68, so I thought he battled really well, with not a lot of support around those guys. But Darling’s been working really hard to get back to his full presence in the front half, and with the limited supply, 35, 36 inside 50s, he looked a real threat. We just couldn’t get it in there.
How is Jeremy McGovern?
Losing ‘Gov’ was a bit loss for us, bit of nerve damage, I don’t know how bad, it came down through the legs, so he couldn’t play. He’s had it before, so hopefully it’s not too bad.
Are Luke Shuey’s ribs okay?
He played the game out, so hopefully it’s not too bad, bloody sore to deal with, bruised or broken ribs, but he finished the game.
How do you maintain confidence?
You need small wins, you need to focus on development. We need to get healthy and fit, and we need to stick to our process. So, we can’t deviate, if you deviate every week then you won’t get anything out of these next 10 weeks. So, we’ve got to learn the hard way unfortunately, and if we can turn a half into three quarters, and three quarters into a game and be as competitive as we can, then that’s the growth we’ll get. Get opportunity into our younger players, fitness ands game running into our senior players, and hopefully when the time’s right we can be more competitive. We’re not happy, absolutely, but we can’t keep changing every week what we do, and we won’t. we’ve just got to stick fat.
Dom Sheed and Elliot Yeo got through the WAFL?
They both got through, their build, but it won’t be a quick fix either. That’ll take weeks. Sheed got injured in the first practice match against Fremantle, and Yeo’s played one-and-a-half games this year. So, we’ve got to get them as fit and match ready as we possibly can. There’s a bye coming up as well so they’ll get to play a bit of WAFL there, but we won’t be throwing them straight back in.
What are you looking for in the midseason draft?
I think we’re locked in for pick one, so that’s coming up this week. So we’ll work through that and make the best pick we can. Ideally, best talent there we’ll take, doing our work on that and we’ll make a call when the time’s right. We’ve got needs across the board, we’ve embarked on this last year, went to the draft. There’s spots available this year for the midseason draft, and the way it works, you don’t get access to the talent coming through, you get access to the previous talent, and some of the guys have really excelled in this half of the season at junior level. So, we’re excited with who we can bring in but I won’t be telling you tonight.
