Where and when: Adelaide Oval, Saturday, April 23, 4.05pm
TV: Live on 7 in Perth, Fox Footy, Kayo and the AFL Live Official app.
Last time we met: West Coast 16.12 (108) def. Port Adelaide 11.5 (71) at Optus Stadium, round three, 2021
It was arguably the Eagles’ best win for the season as they shut down the Power in a high-octane first half and cruised to a 37-point victory. West Coast burst out of the blocks, booting 10 goals to two by the long break, and it was twin towers Josh Kennedy (four goals) and Jack Darling (three) who did the damage. Midfield stars Andrew Gaff (36 disposals), Nic Naitanui, Jack Redden (31), Tim Kelly and Luke Shuey (28) were outstanding in an emphatic home triumph.
What it means for the Eagles: The chance to redeem themselves after a bitterly disappointing Good Friday display against Sydney, plus the opportunity to secure a much-needed four points. Both teams will be desperate, with 16th-placed West Coast (1-4) and last-placed Port (0-5) needing to build some momentum fast.
The stat: The Eagles have a perfect 5-0 record against the Power at Adelaide Oval, although they have always been thrilling contests. West Coast’s biggest wins were by 10 points in 2015 and ’17.
The match-up: Josh Kennedy v Aliir Aliir
All-Australian defender Aliir returned from an ankle complaint last round and shapes as a possible match-up for West Coast’s veteran spearhead, or sidekick Jack Darling, with skipper Tom Jonas also there to marshall Port Adelaide’s backline. Kicking a winning score (17th points for, Port is 16th) has proven tough for the Eagles during a challenging start to the season, but getting more supply to the tall targets will be crucial and history says Kennedy and Darling can be extremely efficient when given enough opportunities.
It’s a big week for: Luke Strnadica
The big man comes in for the job he was recruited for – to help cover the absence of superstar ruck Nic Naitanui (knee) – and has earned his opportunity after plying his craft in the WAFL for the past three seasons at East Fremantle. Strnadica will be West Coast’s 11th debutant and 41st player used in an unprecedented start to the year, and will partner Bailey Williams in the ruck as the Eagles’ midfield attempts to give a better account of themselves.
Big call: Returning midfielder Xavier O’Neill to continue his strong run of form by gathering 20+ disposals and kicking a goal.
