The West Coast Eagles tonight met some specific list needs when recruiting two talented young Western Australian players to the senior list courtesy of the national draft in Sydney.

With its first selection, at pick 23, the club secured small Swan Districts forward Murray Newman and with its final selection at no.28 developing key position player Fraser McInnes was chosen. The club had only two selections in the player ballot.

McInnes, a key forward from Perth, has strong links to the club as a nephew of long-time assistant coach and inaugural squad member Robert Wiley and dual premiership player Michael Brennan.

He missed the national 18s championships with an ankle injury, but played senior football with Perth late in the season.

Newman also played senior football with Swan Districts in 2011 and was a WA 18s representative. He is an exciting young forward or midfield prospect.

National recruiting manager Rohan O’Brien said the club was delighted with its selections and excited at meeting some specific list needs.

“We’re really pleased with the draft result as we rated both Murray and Fraser very highly,” O’Brien said.

“Murray offers as another good option through the midfield or forward and Fraser is a talented, developing tall.”
