So often at times of crisis West Coast Eagles coach Adam Simpson implores his leaders to set the bar. And so often the senior players accept that challenge.

It was again the case against Collingwood at Marvel Stadium where vice-captain Jeremy McGovern was simply outstanding.

While he was not alone in repelling assault after assault from the Pies who led the inside 50 count 61 to 42, he was certainly in the thick of, not only directing but also nullifying so many dangerous situations.

In tandem with Tom Barrass, for so long his key defensive partner, they did so much to keep the Eagles in the battle.

McGovern had 22 possessions and 12 marks, five of which were contested in another first class  performance. While the Eagles have battled adversity in the first month of the season he has stood tall and did again in this match.

In one of the great qualifying round victories in club history, McGovern rose above all others to be best afield.
