1. The West Coast Eagles were outclassed by an experienced Brisbane outfit at Mineral Resources Park on Sunday, and eventually fell to the reigning premiers by 74 points. It was a match where inside 50 supply was crucial and West Coast were unable to enter their offensive arc until midway through the second quarter. By the end of the game, Brisbane had 52 inside 50s to the Eagles’ 11, with West Coast’s forwards needing more supply to inflict any damage or scoreboard pressure against the opposition.
2. West Coast must also work on their first quarter efforts, a problem which has plagued them across the season. In matches this year, the Eagles have been held goalless for seven of eight games, and scoreless in five of these. In the match against Brisbane, West Coast was unable to hit the scoreboard before half-time, while conceding 46 points to the Lions. This left the side with a near-impossible task in the final two quarters.
3. As well as this, the Eagles were beaten convincingly around the ground, finishing the day with 18 clearances to Brisbane’s 32, 92 contested possessions to 107 and one mark inside 50 to the Lions’ 10. Senior coach Michael Prior was disappointed with the performance on the day, and called on the team to lift their effort in the final two games.
4. The Eagles’ four individual goal scorers must be credited for creating opportunities from 11 inside 50s. Imahra Cameron, Hayley Bullas and Evie Gooch all booted snaps through congestion to hit the scoreboard, while vice-captain Dana Hooker stood up to kick the first of the match.
5. Gooch was amongst West Coast’s best for the day, holding down the fort in the backline and kicking a crafty goal when switching to play as a forward. Youngster Sophie McDonald was also impressive as the last line of defence, finishing the day with seven intercepts. Belinda Smith also did well considering the amount of supply from Brisbane and finished the day with six intercepts.
