Mineral Resources Park recently hosted the final 15’s NGA clash of the year, with the Naitanui Academy taking on Fremantle’s Next Generation Academy under lights.
The Derby was for those born in the year 2006, and featured 24 Multicultural and Indigenous players, some of whom drove up to eight hours on the day to compete in the final match of the season.
The team was led by inaugural Eagle and West Coast best and fairest winner – as well as dual All-Australian and West Australian Sports Star of the Year – Steve Malaxos, who was able to provide a wealth of knowledge, as well as newfound game strategies to the Naitanui Academy.
Across the match, West Coast displayed a fast attacking brand of football as well as skillful disposal work, handing them a five-goal lead at the first break.
But Fremantle lifted in the second and third quarters, scoring five goals to two and leading the teams into a defining fourth term.
Thanks to some expert advice from Malaxos, the Naitanui Academy players rose to the occasion, and eventually tasted victory on their home turf, despite the inspired effort from the Dockers.
“There was some good learnings for us in the third quarter, Fremantle gave us a great challenge," Naitanui Academy Manager Chris Brown said.
"Steve reset and guided the boys at the break, with good insight and direction and the boys responded with great composure and resilience, putting the game out of reach with a five goal final term.
“They ran the last quarter out hard, and finished off the game strong.
"Full credit to Wade Splicker, Roger Hayden and the Fremantle team, who fielded a very strong and talented squad, the game was played in great spirits and made for a fantastic showcase of NGA talent here in WA.
“It’s been a great year for our junior boys, they’ll move into our senior squad next year. A lot of them are knocking on the door to play PSA football and WAFL futures which will start up over the next few months.
“A really good way to wrap up a big season for our juniors.
"And as always, none of this would be possible without the fantastic support of our Youth Engagement Partner, BHP.”
