    Match preview: Bombers v Eagles

Check out who it’s a big week for, what happened last time and the key match-up ahead of Sunday’s clash with Essendon

Where and when: Marvel Stadium, Sunday, June 23, 1:00pm (11:00am WST)

TV: Live on 7 in WA, Fox Footy and streaming on Kayo

Last time we met: West Coast 11.5 (71) defeated by Essendon 11.11 (77) at Optus Stadium, round nine, 2024.

West Coast’s fighting comeback bid fell heartbreakingly short, falling to the Bombers by just six points. The Eagles managed to cut the margin to just a one-goal difference with two minutes remaining in the game, but they were unable to kick the final goal to claim the win. Emerging Eagles forward Jack Williams had his best game for the club with three goals, while Tim Kelly (29 disposals) was crucial in the second half, and Jake Waterman (three goals) continued his dominant forward line form.

    02:58

What it means for the Eagles: The Eagles will be looking to bounce back from their last disappointing loss to a previously winless North Melbourne at Optus Stadium. West Coast finished with more scoring shots than the Roos but had trouble converting in front of goal. With the inclusion of co-captain and star forward Oscar Allen, the Eagles will look to rectify their scoreboard woes, and it will be interesting to see the forward line dynamic between Allen, Jack Darling and Jake Waterman, who continues in his career-best form.

The stat: Jamie Cripps has had 20 score assists this season, ranked No.1 at the club and equal 13th in the league.

The match-up: Zach Merrett v Reuben Ginbey

Essendon skipper Merrett has been in outstanding form in 2024, averaging 28.7 disposals (AFL No.11), and torched West Coast with 29 touches and three goals in the round nine cliffhanger at Optus Stadium. Tagging is back in vogue in the AFL and whether the Eagles decide to send a player for a shutdown job, or have the likes of defensively-minded onballer Ginbey keep an eye on Merrett remains to be seen, but they will need to quell his influence to cause a boilover at Marvel.

    12:43

It’s a big week for: Oscar Allen

Allen’s return from a long-term knee injury will bolster the Eagles’ forward line and will hopefully provide some additional scoreboard pressure against the Dons. Being sidelined since round one, Allen has been raring to re-join his teammates, and will be a very handy inclusion for the second half of the season.

Big call: Jake Waterman will reach 115 career goals by kicking three on Sunday against the Bombers.

Match report: Spirited Eagles fall short of Dons

West Coast was right in the hunt until the last moments on Sunday at Marvel Stadium

A spirited West Coast outfit pushed Essendon all the way before falling short by 30 points on Sunday afternoon.

A sealer from Bombers veteran Dyson Heppell secured the Dons' 19.8 (122) to 13.14 (92) win under the Marvel Stadium roof.

Strong periods from the Eagles late in the first and third terms kept them within arm's reach of Essendon, but in the end simply couldn't rein in the margin.

Both sides were opened up defensively when the opposition chose to move the ball with speed. A typically staunch Essendon backline was finding itself disorganised and tense early when the Eagles cut through end-to-end, but tightened up as the game wore on.

Meanwhile West Coast was guilty of allowing Essendon midfielders to slip forward into space with no direct opponent to compete with. Jake Stringer and Sam Durham frequently started in the middle and pushed forward to exploit this lack of attention from the Eagles' midfielders.

Too often were the Eagles drawn en masse to the ball carrier, allowing the home side to hit neat kicks through the corridor. This easy transition was aided by the Bombers' disciplined structure, always maintaining balance in layers around the contest, leaving several exits for the ball carrier at any moment.

Lapses in concentration let West Coast down, and in those patches the Bombers were sure to score heavily, including three goals in four minutes late in the second quarter.

Around the contest the Eagles enjoyed some real dynamism when it came to ball winners.

Consistent performers Elliot Yeo (20 disposals, seven clearances, one goal) and Liam Duggan (19 disposals, three clearances) were a regular presence, while Liam Ryan's ability to clear the ball out the front of the stoppage proved damaging, and Reuben Ginbey's work to minimise Zach Merrett's impact added an element of physicality.

Jamie Cripps was a standout with two goals from 19 disposals, while spearhead Jake Waterman kept his strong form going with three majors. Jack Darling and Jack Petruccelle both chipped in with two majors apiece.

Tom Barrass was impassable down back with 12 intercept possessions and some brilliant strong marks under pressure.

West Coast co-captain Oscar Allen (two goals, nine marks) broke through for his first goal of the season in the third quarter upon his return from a knee injury, and certainly became a factor for Essendon's defence to contend with as the game was in the balance.

A bag of five goals for Essendon star Jake Stringer came as a result of time split between the midfield and forward line, while Sam Durham was absolutely relentless for the Bombers with 29 disposals, five clearances and a goal.
