Albany local Sophie McDonald has gone from strength-to-strength as a defender as she enters her sixth season of AFLW. Originally a hockey player, McDonald was spotted by recruiters in 2018 during an alternate sports talent search. Selected at pick 39 in the AFLW draft the following year, the determined defender has used her physical strength to shackle attacking players and is continuing to develop her craft. Arguably having the toughest task in the competition, McDonald has covered the league’s best key forwards including Gemma Houghton (Port Adelaide), Bonnie Toogood (Essendon) and Cora Staunton (Greater Western Sydney). McDonald is a spearhead in the Eagles backline and will be a key plank to build around moving forward for West Coast.
