Shanahan is a mobile tall forward with a vice-like grip. He was a real presence for the Allies, taking the most contested marks in the championships and amassing 16 disposals, nine marks (four contested) and three goals against Victoria Country to be All-Australian. He kicked 42 goals in 20 matches in the Talent Pathway, including 11 in three VFL games for Essendon, and made the Coates Talent League Team of the Year. Shanahan recorded 6:39 (2km) and 86cm (running vertical jump) at the combine.
