The West Coast Eagles have officially announced the signing of pacey forward Aimee Schmidt, who will join the club for their third season in the competition after spending five years in Sydney.
The former WA representative has previous experience lining up alongside members of the Eagles squad, including captain Emma Swanson and hardnosed defender Maddy Collier when they were with GWS.
Schmidt had also teamed up with Dana Hooker at the Costal Titans during her time at the WAWFL.
General Manager of Community and Game Development Richard O’Connell is pleased to have the dynamic forward on board for the as the club builds towards its third campaign.
“We are really pleased to welcome Aimee back home to Western Australia,” O’Connell said.
“We would like to particularly acknowledge the GWS Giants for their approach to this trade, understanding the needs of the player."
“This is not the first time she’s worn our colours, coincidently in 2016 she played for the Eagles in an exhibition game at Subiaco Oval, alongside current AFLW players Tayla Bresland, Emma Swanson and Kellie Gibson.
“As a player her versatility and goal sense are attributes that have interested us.
“We are really excited at the youth in the upcoming WA draft and Aimee’s five years of AFLW experience will be important ingredients as we continue to develop our list.”
Schmidt is also keen to bolster the side with an established outlook on the game.
“It’s good to be finally at home, and back with the family. I grew up supporting the Eagles, so it’s a nice homecoming to be back wearing an Eagles jumper,” Schmidt said.
“I was at the Giants for five years, and it came to that point in my life where I just wanted to be home. COVID made a big impact on that, so I reached out to the Eagles, and they welcomed me with open arms, so it’s fantastic to be here.
“I think I have a lot of experience, obviously being on an AFLW list for the past five years, so a bit of experience and maturity within the young group, and hopefully I can bring that to the girls.
“I love being around a team and getting around the girls, so it should be a lot of fun.”
GWS and West Coast Eagles came to an agreement for Aimee Schmidt to join West Coast via restricted Free Agency.
