West Coast midfielder Jack Redden is confident draftees Luke Edwards and Zane Trew could play a role if called into an injury-hit engine room against Carlton at the SCG.

Both youngsters impressed with their craft during match simulation work almost immediately after joining the club and have shown promise during WAFL appearances this season.

Edwards, who left last round's clash with South Fremantle at half-time to be the AFL emergency at Optus Stadium, is averaging 17.8 disposals in six WAFL Eagles matches, with Trew returning 18.2 touches and five tackles. 

Along with premiership tagger Mark Hutchings, they could be in the mix to replace star Tim Kelly (knee) after he joined skipper Luke Shuey (hamstring) and Liam Duggan (knee) on the sidelines during the loss to Essendon.

“There’s a few (young players) coming through, which is positive for the club. A few young boys in Zane Trew and Luke Edwards have been really promising from the pre-season from the get-go pretty well,” Redden told 6PR.

“‘Hutchy’ we obviously know what he can do and it’s good to see him fit again.

“I’m sure any of them can come in and slot in nicely.”

Redden has been one of the few mainstays of an injury-riddled onball division this year, producing one of his most consistent campaigns in blue and gold.

The former Lion was runner-up in West Coast’s club champion award in 2018 and would undoubtedly be polling well in this year’s voting.

Redden is averaging 26.1 disposals and 4.5 clearances, while he hasn’t dipped below 20 possessions in any game and gathered a career-best 37 in the round five win over Collingwood.

“I feel like I’ve been pretty consistent across the board,” Redden said.

“I’ve been enjoying the time in the midfield with the likes of ‘Gaffy’ (Andrew Gaff), Dommy Sheed and Tim Kelly, unfortunately he got injured on the weekend.

“We’re doing a lot of good things across the board as a team, so it’s been good to be a part of, we just need to capitalise.”

Plenty of external focus this week has centred on the Eagles’ disappointing fourth-quarter record (3-8) and SCG winless streak, stretching to nine matches.

But Redden said the mood remained positive following back-to-back losses, with the chance to head into the mid-season break with victory over the Blues before a host of senior players near their returns from injury.

“I think the boys have galvanised from the weekend and the last couple of weeks,” he said.

“We’ve got a few things we’re putting in place this week and hopefully we can turn it around with a solid win on the road.

“It would be a nice one going into the bye.”
