Jamaine Jones will celebrate something of a home-coming at GMHBA Stadium tomorrow when the West Coast Eagles aim to arrest a run of outs at Geelong’s home ground.
Jones spent a couple of years on the Cats’ list, but was picked up by the Eagles when he secured the final spot on the squad a little more than 12 months ago. After being the medical sub last week, he has been promoted to replace champion forward Josh Kennedy.
The leading goal-kicker in club history did not make the trip east because of an ankle injury sustained against Collingwood last Friday night.
Jones will not be on his own in returning to the place where his career started, with big man Nathan Vardy also a part of the team that will tackle Geelong having begun his senior football journey in sleepy hollow.
Vardy, a key member of the 2018 premiership team, could get additional ground time in the absence of Kennedy. The Eagles have stretched opposition defences to good effect this year with a three-pronged big man structure, with Kennedy combining with Oscar Allen and Jack Darling.
The Eagles have played six times since the remarkable comeback game in round 10, 2006 when they fought back from being nine goals down early in the third term. They have not since won at the Cattery, but will be keen to reverse that trend in this match.
