The West Coast Eagles AFLW team scored the most comprehensive victory of their brief history with a 39-point rout of Geelong at Mineral Resources Park this afternoon, winning 8.5 (53) to 22.2 (14).

The Eagles controlled virtually all aspects of the game throughout the duration to record their second win of the season and their third in their year-and-a-half existence.

Whether it was Chantella Perera, Maddy Collier or Lauren Gauci in defence, captain Emma Swanson, Niamh Kelly, Aisling McCarthy or Kellie Gibson through the middle, or Grace Kelly and Imahra Cameron up forward, the Eagles had key players contributing from start to finish.

Mikayla Bowen also picked up important touches while Parris Laurie maintained her impeccable 2021 form as the Eagles rebounded from a sub-standard performance in the RAC Derby to show great resilience and commitment eight days later.

Speedy Eagle Niamh Kelly bursts away from the Cats' defence and scores a ripping goal

After dominating the game in the early stages but failing to get a reward for their control, the Eagles were far more enterprising in the second term

They kicked 0.4 in the opening term, despite the good work they enjoyed from the likes of Niamh Kelly, Aisling McCarthy and Bella Lewis, but with Imahra Cameron imposing herself on the game in the second stanza, West Coast started to reap reward for effort.

Cameron had looked dangerous from the outset but three personal goals for the quarter – along with one from Niamh Kelly – and the Eagles had the most dominant half of their history franked with a 27-point lead at the main break.

The Eagles continued to produce some exciting football, using their skill and leg speed to break open the Cats, after the long break.

Niamh Kelly and Grace Kelly continue their hot form, this time combining in front of goal to pile on more misery for the Cats

Niamh Kelly, Collier, Bowen and Lewis were great examples of it, Kelly in particular using her pace to get behind the Geelong defence and finishing with two goals. Her sister Grace also produced a couple of stunning goals, one to start the final term when she dummied an opponent and converted a gem.   

While the offensive football was entertaining, their defensive pressure was also outstanding, holding Geelong goal-less in the first half when the victory was set up.

They now travel to Melbourne to play Richmond at Punt Road next Sunday.
