One of six Eagles to play every game, the durable big man remained a significant threat alongside Josh Kennedy, booting an accurate 30.12 for the season (ranked AFL No.5 for goals). Darling’s form mirrored the team’s early, as a lack of supply and team cohesion heavily impacted the forward line, but he was back to his consistent best from round five onwards as Adam Simpson’s side clicked into gear. He kicked multiple goals in 11 of the last 14 games – including three in the tense elimination final – and was a commanding aerial presence, ranking fourth in the competition for contested marks. Like his leadership, Darling’s ability to set up teammates is an underrated feature of his game, and he was also fourth in the League for goal assists.
Standout performance: A giant in the air
Darling’s game-high three-goal effort was the difference in a narrow victory over the Giants which extended West Coast’s winning streak to eight games in round 13. The Eagles started fast and Darling was a catalyst with two first-quarter majors, while his third after half-time was a much-needed steadier after the visitors burst out of the blocks. He also finished with a massive five contested marks in a powerful performance as West Coast hung on for a 12-point triumph.
