West Coast skipper Luke Shuey says he is confident the Eagles’ best footy can stack up with any rival contender as the club embarks on a sixth-straight finals campaign.
After declaring he expects to be cherry ripe for Saturday night’s elimination final against Collingwood, the explosive midfielder told ABC Grandstand he has full faith in the side to match it with anyone.
“I’m confident we can play some really good footy. I know there haven’t been too many teams actually win it from outside the (top) four over the years, but plenty have given themselves a chance,” Shuey said.
“GWS got there last year from sixth. In this day and age it’s certainly possible, but we’re not thinking too far ahead.
“Obviously we’ve got to get over the Pies next week, but we’re confident our best footy is certainly good enough to give us a real shot against anyone.
“Hopefully we get the ball rolling next week.”
West Coast and Collingwood have played some epic matches in recent times, with three of the past five games – including the 2018 Grand Final when Shuey claimed the Norm Smith Medal – decided by 16 points or less.
The Eagles suffered a costly loss to the Magpies by a point at Optus Stadium in round 17 last year, but belted Nathan Buckley’s understrength side by 66 points in their only clash this season at home in round eight.
Both teams are stacked with firepower, and Shuey is under no illusions about the challenge ahead as West Coast aims to protect its perfect 7-0 record at Optus in 2020 and advance to a semi-final on the road.
“Our season probably suggests that we have played better at home than away but Collingwood, their history shows that they travel really well as well,” he said.
“They knocked us off over here last year by a point. We’ve had some really good battles with them over the years and expecting nothing less.
“Obviously the boys have dug in this last part of the hub and found a way to win a few games. We get a few back next week and we’re really excited to test ourselves against Collingwood, who have probably had a better year than what their spot on the ladder resembles.
“Looking forward to the challenge.”
After overcoming his hamstring strains Shuey could be among a host of experienced inclusions, with Jeremy McGovern (hamstring), Jack Redden (thumb), Mark Hutchings (hamstring) and Lewis Jetta (calf) all pushing to play.
Jamie Cripps will be back after the birth of his son, Reif, and star spearhead Josh Kennedy is likely to overcome his tweaked ankle to take his spot.
“The hammy is fine. I am (right to play),” Shuey said.
“Luckily this pre-finals bye has given me the extra week, which I think if there had of been a game this weekend I probably would have been right anyway.
“But it allows me to get an extra week of training in, so that will be nice and hopefully cherry ripe by next Saturday.”
