West Coast coach Adam Simpson is prepared to rest some experienced Eagles during the condensed fixture on the run home if the need arises.
Eleven Eagles have played every game so far in 2020 – including warhorses Josh Kennedy and Shannon Hurn, plus talismanic ruck Nic Naitanui.
Hard-running wingman Andrew Gaff, star recruit Tim Kelly, Dom Sheed, Brad Sheppard, Jamie Cripps, Tom Barrass, Liam Ryan and Jack Darling also haven’t missed a game to date.
With the prospect of five games in 19 days starting from this Sunday against Greater Western Sydney, the Eagles could delve deep into the squad to get through upcoming clashes with Richmond, Essendon, Western Bulldogs and St Kilda.
West Coast will then round out the home and away campaign against North Melbourne, with the time and location of that clash still to be confirmed.
“We’ve always said with our group it’s a squad mentality that needs to get us over the line,” Simpson told Channel Seven.
“We’ve tried a number of players this year and no doubt we’ll be digging deep into our list in the next month.
“We’re doing that now. It’s going to magnify even more with a shorter turnaround with each game.
“Mature list, some of our players are going to need a rest at stages, so we’re ready for it.”
After boasting a relatively healthy list since the season resumption, the Eagles picked up several fresh injury concerns last week.
Nathan Vardy’s season could be over due to compartment syndrome, Jack Redden has an adductor issue, Jake Waterman needs surgery on a fractured hand and dual club champion Elliot Yeo is facing a spell on the sidelines with groin trouble.
“I’m not sure yet (how long Yeo will be out). Just (depends) how he settles down,” Simpson said.
“He’s got a bit of osteitis (pubis) which can be one week to several weeks.
“We’ll see how he pulls up in the coming days. Rest is normally the best remedy for osteitis. We’re hoping to get him back for the back end of the season, so fingers crossed.”
