MIXING with West Coast's first two draftees of 2007, Chris Masten and Brad Ebert, hit home harder for Luke Shuey than sharing a locker room with the club's established players.
Midfielder Shuey admitted to being a touch star-struck at his new club, especially when walking past premiership heroes Daniel Kerr and Dean Cox, but meeting teammates closer to his vintage had been just as exciting.
"I suppose being a similar age you look at what they've just gone through, you're sort of going through the same process as them," said Shuey, who was taken with West Coast's priority pick (No. 18) in last month's NAB AFL Draft.
"I got to know Chris Masten pretty well this morning (Friday) so I've already developed a pretty good relationship with him.
"He told me to relax and enjoy the experience."
Shuey said he had always looked up to Kerr, who's entering his ninth season at the level, and planned to learn from his off-field preparation.
And the club's acquisition of former Collingwood captain Scott Burns as an assistant coach should also help the Vic Metro representative.
"I was rapt when I found that out," Shuey said of Burns' move west.
"I'll certainly listen to every word he says and try and take on board any advice he gives."
Shuey has been joined at West Coast by fellow Victorians Ashley Smith (taken at No. 36) and Jordan Jones (No. 52), who also had their first training session last Friday.
Smith tested fastest over 20m at October's NAB AFL Draft Camp (2.80sec) and said he was looking forward to playing on Subiaco Oval where his blistering pace and penetrating kick should be valuable assets.
"A few people have told me going to West Coast and playing on Subi is something that's going to suit you a lot," the Dandenong Stingrays product said.
"[There are] open spaces and running into those spaces to create something, so it's definitely going to suit my game which is a real bonus."
Each draftee seemed thrilled with their new home, but it was Jones, taken with the Eagles' last pick, who best expressed the uncertainty and subsequent joy of being drafted.
"Just relief. It's been a long wait, you put all the hard years in during the year to give yourself an opportunity, so it's a great relief and unbelievable," the tall defender said.
