Not even heavy rain could stop WA Premier Colin Barnett from visiting the West Coast Eagles Football Club today.

While wishing the team luck ahead of Saturday's preliminary final, Mr Barnett also personally thanked young Eagle Luke Shuey for his involvement in the State Government's ‘It all starts at school’ campaign.

Currently running in the state’s public schools, the program offers rewards such as a behind-the-scenes look at the Eagles’ inner-sanctum for truant students who are consistently returning to school.

At club headquarters this morning, Mr Barnett said the program was proving to be a success, thanks to its inspiring ambassadors communicating the importance of going to school.

“I would like to thank Luke Shuey and the West Coast Eagles for backing the program," Mr Barnett said.

"Because of their contribution, I believe young people have been encouraged to make the right choices about going to school regularly.

“I also congratulate the Eagles on making the preliminary final. The club turned its fortunes around and moved from the bottom of the ladder last year to top four this year and the players are setting an excellent example for the young people of WA.

"The club’s achievement clearly illustrates that any goal can be realised if you put in the effort.”

Today, seven students from Yule Brook College, Gilmore College and Balga Senior High School enjoyed a tour of the West Coast Eagles Football Club as their reward for having consistent and increased school attendance rates.

And young gun midfielder Shuey made sure he let them know that going to school regularly is vital, no matter what your career path.

“The club drives the facts that players need something to fall back on outside football,” Shuey said.

“It’s important to find a balance between school and other activities. Give school a good crack now and you’ll look back and have no regrets.”
