Star West Coast defender Jeremy McGovern is showing promising signs he will be fit for a crunch clash with League leaders Port Adelaide at Metricon Stadium on Saturday.

McGovern twisted his ankle in a scrimmage against Brisbane’s reserves at the weekend while serving a one-game suspension for striking Gold Coast’s Alex Sexton.

The four-time All Australian was sent for scans and was on crutches, sparking fears he might miss a chunk of football.

However, the club’s General Manager – Football Craig Vozzo was confident McGovern would be in the mix to face the Power.

“It ended up being a reasonable result on the scan,” Vozzo told TAB Radio.

“We were all holding our breath, but it ended up being more the plain, vanilla, old-fashioned roll of the ankle where you strain ligaments but not the syndesmosis word that has plagued us the last couple of years.

“That (his availability) will get back to how quickly the swelling goes down, he’s weight-bearing quite well now, and then how much training he can get in before the Port Adelaide game.

“I think it will probably be a late call later in the week would be my guess, but the early signs are good.”

After defeats to Brisbane and Gold Coast, the Eagles’ foray into the Queensland hub has not been “what we wanted” but Vozzo insisted the squad and staff were fully committed to turning things around.

“No doubt, 100 per cent commitment to what is required to get the results for the football club, no doubt about that,”  he said.

“What would be handy, and I think it’s been talked about, is knowing the extent of it – the start date and finish date (for the hub). There has been a commitment to come and get the job done.

“What has caused some anxiety is when are we getting back? When are things going to normalise back in Perth?

“I think on-field we’re still adjusting. I thought there was some improvement (against) Brisbane versus Gold Coast in what are slipperier conditions for our guys.

“On-field definitely some improvement to be done and had. Then off-field, I think it’s just getting used to the adjustment of living away from family.

“I think the word I would us is ‘difficult’ but we’re working on it.”
