Will Schofield says West Coast are determined to atone for their lacklustre showing against Gold Coast by bouncing back against Brisbane on Saturday night.
The veteran defender told SEN’s Dwayne’s World program that the Eagles had narrowed their focus on the contested side of their game after being outgunned by the Suns at Metricon Stadium in their round two contest.
Stuart Dew’s charges were strong in the clinches last Saturday night, winning the contested possession battle 137 to 115 against the experienced Eagles.
Schofield said it was near impossible to win games without the weight of possession in one’s favour.
“Clearly our performance on the weekend was really disappointing for us and certainly didn’t reflect what we would have liked to have out there, but that’s the lovely thing about footy, we’ve got next week to bounce back against Brisbane and we’re working pretty quickly to rectify things on the field,” Schofield said.
“We definitely want to improve on a few things, around the contest was a pretty obvious one. You can look at a lot of different measures, but if you can’t win contests against your opponent you are very rarely going to win a game of AFL footy.
“We definitely didn’t place a high enough priority or win the footy when we needed to and Gold Coast did.
“It’s a pretty simple fix for us and we are going to try do it. There are no guarantees either, but we’ll be trying.”
Schofield is in the mix to play his first game of season 2020 after fellow key defender Jeremy McGovern’s bid to overturn a striking charge at the AFL Tribunal proved unsuccessful.
The 2018 premiership player suggested he was ready to roll after adjusting to life inside the club’s Gold Coast hub.
“We’re staying in a five star resort so it’s fine, but we’ve got to make it feel as homely as possible,” Schofield said.
“I did go for a surf when the restrictions got lifted, but I don’t think anyone is over here for a holiday.
“We’re here to win games of footy. Yes, it’s a good mental release to do what you want to do, but come towards the back of the week it’s pure footy focus.
“Today is our day off, but we’ve got a regular schedule tomorrow and a game Saturday night.”
