The first intra-club practice match is all about ticking … ticking the legs over and ticking a few boxes.

And the West Coast Eagles match committee would have put one bold tick alongside the box that had today’s intra-club hit-out listed on it.

The morning session at Mineral Resources Park was played in cooler conditions than anticipated and no doubt the players appreciated that aspect.

There is not a lot to be gained from these matches that pit teammate against teammate, but here’s 10 key points.

1. Dom Sheed was probably best afield, accumulating possessions in his typical loping manner and generally using it with purpose.

2. Jamie Cripps signed a new contract last week, but nothing else has changed. He worked hard up and down the ground – his trademark two-way running a feature even in this contest.

3. Midfield recruit Tim Kelly showed he has quickly adjusted to playing alongside his new engine room teammates, also collecting countless possessions while developing a deeper chemistry and understanding with those around him.

4. Jake Waterman continues to push for early opportunities, providing a focal point up forward, leading strongly and hitting the scoreboard.

5. Flying Liam Ryan showed his aerial attributes to good effect, taking one particularly impressive grab in the third quarter. He’s looking sharp and continues to work hard both ways.

6. Nic Naitanui did what he needed to do out of the middle before putting the cue in the rack at three-quarter time, while Tom Hickey and Bailey Williams also impressed at times.

7. Jarrod Brander was under notice on a wing, pressing his claims for an opportunity in the first Marsh Community Series match against Essendon at Mineral Resources Park. While he has been under notice in that role through training, he also pushed forward in the last term.

8. Andrew Gaff, like Sheed, cruised through the midfield and gathered possessions at will. His trademark left foot was deftly accurate and he would have been satisfied with the run.

9. The evolving generation of defenders were also impressive. Tom Cole, Liam Duggan and Jackson Nelson all looking sharp and doing what they had to do.

10. Midfielder Hamish Brayshaw, entering his third season on the list, continued to build on a solid body of pre-season work, under notice throughout while Jamaine Jones, the former Geelong forward pressing for a vacancy on the list, did his chances no harm with a lively display.
