West Coast Eagles fans have not seen the best of exciting utility Jarrod Brander, according to new club captain Luke Shuey.
Speaking to TAB Radio this morning, the 2019 John Worsfold medallist was pressed on which young Eagle might have a breakout season this year.
Shuey showed little hesitation before nominating Brander, who was recruited to the Eagles with pick No.13 in the 2017 AFL Draft.
He might have only played three games at the highest level, but Brander has impressed with his skill and athleticism at WAFL level.
The 20-year-old Bendigo product averaged 17 disposals, reeled in 69 marks and booted nine goals from his 11 appearances with the WAFL Eagles last year before suffering a season-ending hamstring injury against Swan Districts in round 17.
Shuey said he was excited to see what the burgeoning key position player could produce in 2020.
“Jarrod Brander probably hasn’t played a lot of senior footy for us, but he is super talented,” Shuey said.
“Poor Jarrod, the games he has come in for as a first- and second-year player have been some of the toughest games in the competition. He’s had Geelong in Geelong and Brisbane in Brisbane last year.
“Hopefully he can have a full season and get a few more games under his belt and everyone can see what he is capable of.
“We’ve got a few young guys that I’m hoping can take the next step. If they can do what they do at training they’ll be in a pretty good position to have a good season.”
Shuey was equally eager to get his first look at boom recruit Tim Kelly in action during the upcoming Marsh Community Series.
West Coast’s skipper said Kelly, who finished fifth in the 2019 Brownlow Medal race, was gelling well with his new teammates.
“It’s been nice (training alongside him), a lot nicer than having to chase him around and try and stop him,” Shuey joked.
“He’s going to be a good player for us. Obviously what he’s done over his first two seasons (with Geelong) has been quite remarkable for a guy who was overlooked in so many drafts.
“I think if our club history with these sort of guys is anything to go by he’s in for a bright future at the club.
“I’m really looking forward to playing with him.”
