It’s safe to say that Eagles supporters got their money’s worth in round nine when their team took on the Cats.
Fans would have experienced everything from nervousness and tension as the Eagles leaving the door ajar at half time booting 4.17, to the incredible highs brought about from Nic Naitanui’s screamer in the last quarter before the boys ran away with a terrific win.
But not only was this match hugely triumphant on the field, it was an enormous victory off the field as well.
Round nine was Indigenous round, which is held each year in recognition of the important contributions Indigenous footballers have made throughout the history of the game, and Domain Stadium was a celebration of Indigenous culture.
The club acknowledged past and present Indigenous players, while at the same time helping promote the Wirrpanda Foundation, a charity formed by West Coast legend David Wirrpanda.
Supported by Principal Community Partner BHP Billiton, the Foundation held its ninth annual tin shake at the game, as well as selling limited edition pashmina scarves, puzzles, pins and caps around the ground.
Thanks to the generosity of West Coast fans, the match raised more than $25,000 for the Wirrpanda Foundation to enable its important work to continue. All funds will go directly to the foundation’s mentoring programs which aim to promote strong role models and healthy life choices among young Indigenous people.
The club is proud to assist Foundation's ongoing work to reduce the gap between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people in our society by empowering and building capacity among Aboriginal people and their communities.
The West Coast Eagles would like to thank each and every fan who contributed to this cause, and it’s principal community partner BHP Billiton, for making the match a huge success.
