West Coast Eagles forward Josh Hill will wear specially designed boots tomorrow against Geelong in celebration of Indigenous Round.
The boots were designed by his uncle Walter McGuire using acrylic pens and represent his team as well as his Kimberley heritage. The blue surrounding the eagle references the sea, sky and of course the West Coast Eagles’ blue colours.
In respect to Noongar art tradition, the red lines represent the maze-like tunnels formed by the Waagul throughout the Noongar country. The Balga, or grass tree, is included as a familiar feature of South West region of WA which is Noongar boodja/country.
“It sends a bit of a message about the story of my life,” Hill said.
“The Eagle sis based on my totem, which is the Wedge-tailed Eagle, I think they’ve come up great.
“Indigenous Round is a big part of the season for al Aboriginal players.
“It’s a round to represent all of our cultures and history of our families.
“Closing the gap as a collective group, not just the Indigenous boys but everyone at the club and in the AFL.”
