The West Coast Eagles is calling on all members and fans to support its annual Cans for a Cause food drive next weekend.
Cans for a Cause benefits one of the club’s most worthy charitable partners, Foodbank WA, which supports over 51,300 people each month in Western Australia.
The annual event provides an opportunity for West Coast fans to help Foodbank fight hunger in Western Australia by providing cans of food and canned meals that will help provide even more meals for those in need.
The initiative was initially founded by West Coast Eagles legend and former assistant coach Don Pyke and last year’s drive netted more than five tonnes of food – the equivalent of more than 7000 meals.
Although Pyke has moved on from the club, several West Coast legends have volunteered to collect fans’ donations next Sunday, including Ashley McIntosh, Craig Turley and Michael Braun.
“The support we receive from the West Coast Eagles and their terrific fans each year not only helps us spread the word about the issue of hunger in Western Australia but it also means we are able to feed even more people in need especially during the colder months of the year” said Greg Hebble, CEO Foodbank WA
“Winter storms and cold nights are a harsh reminder that many people in our community are in desperate need of help. With winter on the way we are preparing for one of our busiest times of year.
The canned goods collected on Sunday 15 May will help us provide winter staple foods that will distributed across our six branches in WA”
“We encourage all fans to bring along canned soup, tinned meals and canned fruits and vegetables”.
Foodbank ambassador and West Coast Eagles captain Shannon Hurn said it was great to see that the OWLS (older, wiser, larger, slower players) were continuing to give back to the community through the club.
“Foodbank provides over 5 million meals to Western Australians in need each year,” Hurn said.
“For our members and past players to get behind such a great cause, year after year, really shows how generous the West Coast family are.”
The West Coast Eagles Cans for a Cause match is scheduled for the club’s Sunday, May 15 round eight fixture against St Kilda.
Anyone attending the match is encouraged to bring along a can of food and drop it into one of Foodbank’s dedicated donation bins located around Domain Stadium.
